In Umbria, we hired a car so that we could have some independence, and do a bit of exploring.
It all sounded like a good idea, however we found driving fairly challenging (read horrendous.)
Never the less we did spend a day exploring Assisi, and it was just beautiful.
Perfect sunny weather and so many things to see.
It was a definite highlight of the trip.

Looking out over the countryside, from Assisi.
The stone work was all a beautiful soft colour, at times almost pink. |
Up towards Santa Chiara.
Every little space seems to be built on, no matter how steep the ground. |
Typical street, although they're not all this flat. |
Lots of interesting twists and turns, over and under buildings and streets. |
More of the incredible view. |
Not much garden, but lots of pot plants. |
Lovely iron work, so many arts and crafts in evidence. |
